So Long, Fairwell

This school year is officially over for me. My freshman year is complete. I have taken my last final. I'm basically packed and ready to hit the road. Well...kinda. But I will be.

So, I'll be leaving school and going home for the summer. Odds are that I will not blog while on summer vacation. I know you will miss me. Maybe.

Don't fret! I'm sure I shall be back in the fall!

I'm sure you were really worried, weren't you?

Adios until the fall, y'all!

Thanks but no thanks...

So...let's say that you are doing laundry on a Sunday afternoon. You're a little distracted-not really paying attention to what you are doing...
Then you procrastinate folding your laundry all day...finally, towards 10 o'clock at night, you decide to finally start on it. You get done folding all of your clothes, start to put them away and then you think to yourself...

"Self, I don't think that you folded that skirt you wore yesterday that you definitely washed today...hmmm...it is definitely not here" (panic!) "oh, gosh! Where is it? Did I leave it in the laundry room? Did someone steal it? I have to go check!"

You go back to the laundry room. What do you find?

Your clothes. A whole load of them. That you forget all about.

"Self! How could you!"

And what else do you happen to notice?

Your clothes are FOLDED.

This means someone has not only taken your clothes out of the dryer but they also took the time and effort to carefully fold them for you.

Creepy.

Harvard kicked some butt...kinda

WE WON! 69-57! YIPPEEEE!!!!

I thought I'd give a shout out to the awesomeness (or um...okayness/awfulness) that is my school! Can I hear a WHOOP, WHOOP? just kidding...I'm so not into this peppy, school-spirited stuff? Oh, well, whatever...WE WON! And we rarely do that! Sadly, there weren't too many people there to witness it. :( Those that were there were pretty stoked though.

On another note, Our-Mascot-Who-Shall-Remain-Nameless-Cuz-I-Don't-Want-Stalkers (who surely could guess where I go to school by now...yet, why would they or anyone else care?) had gum in its "hair"...the poor thing. :( That is how respected my dear school is.

I'd also like to give a little shout out to the band. They were pretty darn awesome. They played "Carry On My Wayward Son" and won my heart. Actually, I thought they were pretty good before that but when they played that! Oh! They not only won my heart but my undying loyalty! Or something...

So, I hate to admit it but I obviously had fun. Don't tell anyone!

Golly Gee Willikers!

It's really raining out there!
With wind too!

Question: Is it weird that I frequently blog about whatever is outside of my window? I think it probably says a lot about where I spend most of my time...how lame. Oh, well.

I'm going to a basketball game tonight, are you proud of me? I'm trying to be all school spirited and stuff...no, actually, one of my teachers "requests" (for a grade) that we participate in campus activities. Of course, I think this is a great idea...but I still don't want to do it. I suppose I do enjoy it though...why am I blabbering about this?

Reading? Ha!

Not on a day like this!

It's sunny!

It's the perfect temperature!

There is a wonderful breeze!

And even better...there is little, if any, snow left on the ground!

How could I possibly read?

NOTICE: Yes...these are pics I took in the fall but we can pretend they are spring pictures, can't we? Alright, thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

We didn't start the fire...

All of those fire drills finally paid off, folks! A girl on the top floor's cell phone charger sparked and caught a towel or something on fire. So,what does this mean? All the people in my building had the pleasure of standing out in the parking lot for two hours.

It kind of put a hold on my homework which I was quite studiously doing...kind of.

It also put a hold on one guy's shower time...he came out of the building in nothing but a towel. Only to find out that it wasn't the usually five minute drill...quite funny. And I'm quite glad that it wasn't me.

The moral of the story? Don't leave things plugged in or around flammable objects...and put your clothes on!

Loud Neighbors are no fun...

...loudness makes me want to hurt someone!

Okay, I like Taylor Swift and "Johnny and June" as much as the next person but really! Must it be blared? Must you sing along loudly? At all hours of the day and night?

Okay,I know I made it sound like I have awful neighbors. I don't. They just sporatically burst into random loud song. It is a bit amusing and I could have worse neighbors. Right?

Have any of you ever had loud, annoying neighbors? Worse than mine? I need to hear your stories!

Blackout

So, this blog is supposed to be about my college experiences, right? Yeah, I guess I went off on a The Office tangent and forgot that...oh, well. I'm back.

So, my roommate's phone kept going off every(what seemed to be) ten minutes or so for no apparent reason. That didn't bother me so much but because it was about 6:30 in the morning it kind of did. And then the power went out (didn't learn this until later) and my printer started to make queer noises (due to loss of power but I didn't know this cuz it was dark and I was trying to sleep). And then it came. The lovely fire alarm at 7 o'clock in the morning...I don't need to be up until 8. Only a lost hour, not really a big deal...Anyhow, fire alarm. Stand outside in the cold in your PJs. It's a fun time. Get back to my room, lights still out. Oh, did I forget to mention that I had to walk up 9 flights of stairs? early in the morning?

Oh, well. I'm not complaining. I used to wake up this early anyway, right? But that was back when I didn't stay up as late. And I really didn't mind the nine flights of stairs like I thought I would. I guess I'm in better shape than I thought(ha ha ha, yeah, right). The lights came back on in about a half hour, no fear! The many joys of campus life! Oh, my alarm clock just went off...

Oh, in a little twist of irony, My roommate and I saw a commercial telling us to unplug your phone chargers when you aren't using them. So, we were talking about preserving energy last night before we went to bed. We were talking about all of the energy we waste by keeping all of our things plugged in...and then what happens? The power goes out. Perhaps someone up there is trying to tell us something?

Unplug your plugger thingys if you aren't usin' em!!

Oh, and don't forget your key when you go out for the fire drill. I say this from observance not from my own experiences. Thank goodness!

Check this out!

For my art class here at Harvard, we had to go to this quilt exhibit. Here is a piece that really caught my attention. It was amazing. This is Fraser Smith's "Calypso". I saw it in person and seriously...it looked like a real quilt!

Are you curious? Check out this website to see what this thing is really made of!

Oh, and while I'm talking about the things that my art class has exposed me to, check out Julian Beever. He is also amazing.

Cough, cough...

Ugh! I'm really sick of smokers! It is killing me (figuratively and literally). It seems like there is someone smoking around every corner I turn and outside every building I enter/exit. I really don't want to die from second hand smoke. Help me out!
Here is a lovely picture by van Gogh...

Anyway, I'm not sure exactly what van Gogh meant by this picture and it probably isn't relevant but I like to pretend that it is. Do you really still want to be smoking even after death?

I think it bothers me so much only because I had this naive thought floating around in my little town head that less and less people actually smoked any more. Apparently, I was wrong. Or perhaps, I never saw anyone in my town smoking because they were all away at college smoking?
Okay, okay. I am aware of how difficult it is to stop smoking but seriously! People that smoke aren't just hurting themselves. They are hurting everyone around them. So, if you smoke, please at least try to go somewhere where there are few to no people. Please!

Well, this is my last message to those that want to choke me to death:

Some words of wisdom...

I did laundry yesterday. For you fellow college students out there, I suggest that you do your laundry in the early morning or maybe even late at night. I didn't have to wait to wash mine but right after I put my clothes in, twenty or so people came in. There were a lot of washers that had clean clothes in them that were just sitting there. So, another word of advice, be courteous and remove your clothes as soon as possible. It just isn't cool to keep other people waiting. And when you do that, some people may not be as nice and throw your clothes out. I've heard it happens.

And bring something with you to entertain you. I didn't and I was stuck watching the dryers spin in unison for twenty minutes. Definitely, ask a friend to do their laundry with you. That makes it somewhat fun. I had a friend with me for awhile but she had a previous engagement to attend to. :(

You know how I said you shouldn't wear flip flops when sneaking about campus? It might be a good idea to never wear flip flops. I wore them the other day and I'd have to say that was a mistake. Too much walking and rarely wearing flip flops didn't combine well for me... I guess if you wear flip flops all of the time its no big deal but for me...not good.

Lanyards...are great. You can put your student ID and you're room key on it and you'll always have them with you. I have one with a coin purse kind of thing on it that my cell phone fits in. It makes it so much easier to keep track of your stuff. I'd be dropping and losing my stuff all over the place if it weren't for that. I know they look dorky but they are so handy that it makes up for it. Not like crocs. Crocs are convenient but they are hideous...I'm sorry but they are. You know what? I don't think I've seen a single college student wearing crocs... I'm so proud of my peers.

Speaking of peers. Seriously, I've seen many college students giving weird looks to older middle aged students in class. That isn't cool. They are trying to improve themselves just like us youngin's. Don't give them nasty looks or make them feel bad for it. Try to include them, not ostracize them. Geez, I would've thought that was an obvious one...

I don't know if any other college students read my blog but if there are any of you out there that have more advice feel free to leave a comment.

What do college students do when they have spare time?

Yes, my friend and I did run around campus snooping where we ought not to...and yes it was silly and fun. Of course, if I can make a suggestion, I'd suggest that one not wear flip flops while sneaking around. It does not make for very sneaky traveling. This was me following my cleverly sneakered friend... flip flop, flippy flop...flip floppy flip... Yeah, ridiculous. She kept turning back to laugh at me...

Oh, and before you get worried about us causing mischief, we weren't really. We didn't vandalize anything or break anything or any of that other foolishness. We were just walking around (not too quietly) in a fairly empty building. No classrooms that I am aware of. Just looking for a "weird tiny door" that we had heard was in the building. It was said to be a curious site and we were bored... and curious. Unfortunately, we never came across what we were looking for...but then again we may have been in the wrong building...

Eh...maybe I should have been reading a few things for my classes but why waste a good afternoon with your nose in a book? That is what early evenings are for! Then you spend your evening blogging about your silly not really very interesting afternoon.

That is what a college student does with their not really "spare" time.

Time Goes By...

so slowly... for those who wait... yes, that is a song by Madonna and I'm sorry about that but if fits in very well with what I'm going to talk about.
I feel like I've been here for a year already! Okay, maybe just a week. It's really only been three days. I think it is because I get up early and go to bed late. It makes me feel like I'm going through two days rather than just one.
I can't wait until classes start (which they do tomorrow). I'll finally have something to occupy my time and thoughts. My brain has pretty much gone to mush. No, it is probably more to a liquid state by now. I did refer to the library as a "lie-berry" earlier. I'm regressing...it is really sad.
I've been filling my time up playing family feud online and solitaire...and bookworm. I know I'm a real dork for playing all three of those. I really have no life. But now my sis has joined me here at Cambridge and I'm pretty excited to be having one less person to miss. I hope that it is more help than harm having her here with me. I don't want to rely on her too much but I enjoy having her around.
I really miss all my peeps out there. I feel a little guilty saying that because my BFF Michelle is being an exchange student in Germany for a year and I'm complaining about missing people that are only an hour, or more in some cases, away. My family has been keeping in contact pretty well so I don't miss them quite as much as I might if I never heard from them...on the bright side.
I don't let the guilt or the bright side get to me though. I still miss them... :(

Am I alone out there?

Okay, here are my thoughts from the convocation today: "Wow, just how annoying and disrespectful are my peers? It really saddens me when I think about how different I am from them. I was somehow taught to show respect and be considerate of other people. How wrong my parents were."
I can't explain how delighted I was to see someone stand up and tell them to be quiet. I guess it was just nice seeing that I'm not really as alone as I thought I was. I thought I'd share that with everyone (or like the two people that read my blog). Don't you love it when God proves you wrong? I know I do.
This is semi-related to the convo. I don't think I've ever seen that many cell phones all at once. Nearly every single freshman had his/her cell phone out texting merrily while someone was trying to give a speech. Okay, it was probably only one third of the crowd...perhaps less...I should give my peers a break. This is the world they've grown up in. They know not what they do.

Okay, now on a different topic:

Wow, just as I was thinking that "Cambridge" wasn't so bad, I witness an especially sickening car crash. Well, by witness I mean that I heard the sickening sounds and saw the aftermath. Seriously, you would not believe the number of ambulances and police cars. And somewhere off in the distance a car's horn is going off...just to add to this pleasant scene.

Before that, I was admiring the campus and thinking that it was really not all that bad. "Cambridge" isn't really too awful. It has its good points. I think I enjoy the mix of the older buildings and the trees. I think that is what gets me about it. And that is why I can't quit staring out of my window. I guess I'm still a little awed by large buildings...

Ugh, now I smell a very icky smelling smell coming from my window...eww. Perhaps it is smell finally drifting towards me from the crash...or maybe it is the notorious smell of "Cambridge".

So, I just moved in...

UGH! I just moved into Harvard...j/k. Anyway, I have been moved in for about 18 hours now. I have been being anti-social! I've tried not to be! I promise! I tried talking to people. I made small talk to the point of near awkwardness...I guess I made some pretty solid aquintances atleast.
I suppose I haven't made any real friends because I've been sitting alone in my room talking to my family, friends, and boyfriend and not trying to talk to anyone here. I did leave my door wide open. The only people to venture in were my RAs.
Another problem: At the bash last night, I started off talking with my "floor friends" (I use friends loosely because I had only just met them) and ended up talking to my old high school friends of my friends. Pluh! That was my mistake. I should have waved at them and then continued on my merry way to potential friends.
Well, my roommate will arrive today so I am hoping that she will be in desperate need of a friend- like me.

Okay, Okay. I know I just made my first day/night here sound very tragically sad but it really wasn't all that bad. I plan on doing some activities today that will "put me out there". Surely, today I will meet someone that I'll like enough to consider as a friend.

Hey, feel free to leave some comments on this subject!
